8. The Faculty's computer facility - ed-IT

The Faculty of Education's ed-IT unit provides students with computer services, advice and support. The Faculty of Education considers that information technology (IT) has an important role to play in education. Computers are being incorporated into the curriculum of all courses in the Faculty and successful study in the programs offered will require students to develop computer literacy.

To assist with these skills, the Faculty provides an open-access computer laboratory containing both Windows and Mac machines, and a multimedia studio. The open-access laboratory is open all year round during normal office hours, with extended hours during semester teaching periods when it is open until 8pm weekdays and from 10am-4pm Saturdays. The open-access laboratory incorporates a staffed Help Desk support service to assist students and staff with their computer usage, and maintain the equipment.

The Multimedia Studio has additional facilities for staff and students to assist them with the development, production and research of teaching aids, class assignments and multimedia projects. Scanners are available to cope with images, text, photos, optical character recognition (OCR) as well as slide scanning. The Multimedia Studio is equiped with the latest equipment and technology for video production and digital output. Staff and students can work on high-end equipment or a more manageable and user friendly system. Staff are on hand to offer assistance to those who require it. They will be only too happy to assist with the various methods of video compression, and provide advice as to which compression codec is appropriate to best suit your needs.

All Faculty of Education students are issued with an Education account that entitles them to use the Education computers, scanners and printers, in all labs, and a free annual allowance of 100 printing credits is provided.
