16. Professional experience program
This program offers opportunities for Bachelor of Commerce students to gain valuable professional experience before graduation. Students who take advantage of the program are able to test out career options and build relationships with potential employers.
There are several ways for students to participate in professional experience programs, these include:
industry year
Students undertake a 12 month professional placement before their final year of study. Positions are available in a range of organisations and students are also encouraged to seek out industry year programs offered directly by employers.
vacation employment program
Successful applicants undertake an 8-12 week, paid industry placement, during the summer break. Positions are usually offered to penultimate year students.
graduate employment activities
Graduate employment activities generally target final year students for recruitment to graduate positions. As part of their career planning process, students from all year levels are encouraged to participate in information sessions and careers fairs, and to network with potential employers.
international employment program
This program communicates current international employment opportunities, including overseas vacation work. Opportunities are advertised via the Careers and Employment Careers Online job and events database.
management practicum
Students undertake group placements in business and government host organisations to work on a business challenge facing the organisation. Acting as consultants, groups spend a half-day each week in their organisation, investigating and analysing the business challenge and developing and presenting a range of solutions for their hosts.
student workplace projects
Students from all year levels can gain valuable first-hand industry experience working 40-80 hours, over six months, on a defined project within a host organisation.
