University statute 11.5 (http://www.unimelb.edu.au/Statutes/s115.html) requires that students make satisfactory progress in their courses. In accordance with the provisions of Statute 11.5, the Faculty annually reviews the academic progress of all undergraduate students and postgraduate coursework students. Students whose progress is considered to be unsatisfactory are invited to appear in person before the Faculty's Unsatisfactory Progress Committee or provide a written submission to the committee concerning the circumstances which they believe contributed to their unsatisfactory progress, and any evidence of changed circumstances which they feel will result in an improved performance in the future.
In considering a student's progress the Faculty will normally take into account personal, financial and academic problems.
The outcome of the Unsatisfactory Progress Committee's review will depend on the nature and degree of the unsatisfactory progress, the nature of the problems, the submission that students make, and the extent to which they can demonstrate that they can overcome the problems that have affected their study.
Faculty Unsatisfactory Progress Committee recommendations may include:
Repeating subjects
Meeting with a course advisor or referral to University Student Services
Taking a Leave of Absence from study
Reducing to a part time enrolment
Termination from course
Students may be recommended for termination if following their attempt at the performance in a component or components of assessments they:
Fail in at least 50 point of subjects.
Fail in any subject for the second time.
Re-admission will be considered by the Faculty if the satisfactory completion of studies of a similar nature through the University's Community Access Program (CAP) or at another institution indicates academic rehabilitation.
