2006 was the final year of intake into this course.
The Graduate Diploma in Education (Primary Stream) is a one-year full-time or two-years part-time course. The course is only available to graduates who complete the Bachelor of Early Childhood Studies between 1995-2005 at the University of Melbourne (refer 'Entry Requirements' below). The course will enable these graduates to upgrade their qualifications for registration as early years teachers in primary schools. Students will complete 45 days of satisfactory supervised practicum in schools in conjunction with learning area and education studies.
On completion of the Graduate Diploma in Education (Primary Stream) graduate will:
have extended their knowledge as early childhood educators, of the contexts in which young children learn, to include the primary school setting;
be able to demonstrate an understanding of the current curriculum pedagogy in the design and implementation of learning experiences for young children in the primary school;
be able to plan and implement learning experiences for children across the key learning areas of the primary school curriculum;
show an awareness of how learning experiences can be adapted to meet the diverse learning needs of children;
show an awareness of current initiatives in primary schools including recent curriculum developments in literacy and numeracy and partnerships with parents;
understand the diverse roles of teachers' work in school settings; and
appreciate the historical, philosophical and cultural perspectives of schooling in Australia and the role of schools in society.
Applicants must have completed a Bachelor of Early Childhood Studies (400 points); or Bachelor of Early Childhood Studies (350 points) and a Graduate Certificate of Early Childhood Studies at the University of Melbourne between the years 1995-2005.
In 2007, students in the Graduate Diploma in Education (Primary) course begin classes in the week beginning 19 February.
