The University of Melbourne and La Trobe University offer a comprehensive program in Hellenic studies spanning the four millennia of the continuous linguistic and cultural tradition of Hellenism. The major in Hellenic studies is designed to give a clearer focus to the underlying unity of the plethora of subjects of Hellenic interest taught within the Faculty of Arts and the program of Hellenic studies at La Trobe University.

1. Faculty of Arts requirements

Special enrolment arrangements apply for Modern Greek subjects taught by La Trobe University. Students should contact the Faculty of Arts Office for application forms and details.

2. Diploma in Arts (Hellenic Studies)

The Diploma in Arts (Hellenic Studies) is only available to students who are currently enrolled in a degree course at the University of Melbourne. It consists of a three-year sequence of study, and adds one year to the duration of your degree.

Students must complete 25 points of first-year Ancient Greek or Modern Greek and 75 points of second/third-year subjects selected from the list above. Alternatively, students who have completed appropriate background studies at first year may complete 100 points of second/third-year subjects from the list above. The Diploma may include a maximum of 50 points of subjects taught by La Trobe University.

3. Requirements for a major

A major in Hellenic studies usually consists of subjects, totalling 112.5 points. It comprises:

• at least 25 points of first-year arts (Ancient Greek or Modern Greek is recommended); and

• seven second/third-year subjects from the below list (87.5 points).

Students should note that completing Modern Greek at first year will increase the options available after first year.

4. Honours entry

Hellenic studies may be taken as combined honours only.

4.1. Combined honours

The prerequisites for entry to combined honours in Hellenic studies are:

• completion of all the requirements of the BA; and

• completion of a major in Hellenic studies; and

• an average grade over the major in Hellenic studies of H2B or higher; and

• completion of a major in the combined area of study; and

• language study to at least intermediate B level.

5. Honours requirements

5.1. Combined honours

Students completing combined honours in Hellenic studies complete:

• 922-122 LaTrobe-Modern Greek Thesis (37.5 points); and

• one approved Hellenic studies subject at fourth year (12.5 points); and

• an appropriate language subject (12.5 points); and

• subjects in the combined area of study according to its honours requirements (37.5 points).

or

• honours thesis in the combined area of study (37.5 points); and

• subjects in the combined area of study according to its honours requirements (25 points); and

• two approved Hellenic studies subjects at fourth year (25 points); and

• an appropriate language subject (12.5 points).

6. Career opportunities

Melbourne claims the largest and most vigorous concentration of Hellenes outside Greece, and by choosing to major in Hellenic studies graduates will emphasise their capacity to administer knowledgeably to this sizeable community in its diverse manifestations. Graduate students will be able to apply the skills derived from multidisciplinary study of a rich and distinguished tradition of language and culture, fundamental to Western civilisation.
