The Department of Economics in the Faculty of Economics and Commerce offers a selection of subjects, a major and an honours program in economics to Bachelor of Arts students.

1. Faculty of Arts requirements

Students undertaking the Bachelor of Arts are permitted to enrol in a range of subjects offered by other faculties, but must complete a minimum of 50 points of first-year subjects and 100 points of second/third-year subjects in areas of study approved by the Faculty of Arts. BA students wishing to undertake a major in economics will need to plan their course carefully to ensure they meet both departmental prerequisites and Faculty requirements.

BA combined course students are not permitted to enrol in these subjects for credit towards the arts component of the combined degree. Please consult a Faculty of Arts course adviser for more information.

2. Prerequisites

Students intending to major in economics should note that Mathematical Methods is a prerequisite for 316-130 Quantitative Methods 1. 316-101 Introductory Macroeconomics and 316-102 Introductory Microeconomics must be completed before entering second year 316-201 Intermediate Macroeconomics and 316-202 Intermediate Microeconomics.

3. Requirements for a major

A major in economics in the Bachelor of Arts degree usually consists of ten 12.5-point subjects totalling 125 points. It comprises:

*Students wishing to enter the BA (Honours) in economics should check the honours entry requirement status of these subjects.

4. Entry to honours

The prerequisites for entry to fourth-year honours in economics are:

• completion of all the requirements for the BA; and

• completion of a major in economics which must include:

  • 316-313 Microeconomics

  • 316-312 Macroeconomics

  • 316-316 Basic Econometrics or 316-317 Econometrics

  • another level-300 economics subject or other approved third-year subject

• an average grade of H2B or higher over the subjects of the major.

The Faculty of Arts will not admit to honours a candidate who has previously graduated Bachelor of Commerce (honours or ordinary degree).

5. Honours requirements

5.1. Combined honours

It is possible to combine honours in economics with several areas of study, for example economics and history, economics and philosophy, and economics and political science. Other combinations may be considered. In all cases, candidates are required to obtain approval from the heads of schools concerned and the Faculty of Arts. Any student interested in undertaking combined honours should contact the Faculty of Arts for more information.
