191-102 Crime and Control

Formerly available as 191-002. Students who have completed 191-002 are not eligible to enrol in this subject.

The aim of this subject is to provide a broad survey and introduction to the major institutions of the criminal justice system, and examines the roles, objectives and methods of criminal justice institutions such as the police, the courts, prisons, corrections, community crime prevention and victim services. Students completing the subject should have developed an understanding of the key players and operation of state agencies in responding to (and creating) offensive behaviour, and have developed a capacity to describe and analyse the strengths and weaknesses of existing forms and methods of crime control in Australia.

• have the ability to plan work and to use time effectively.

An essay of 2000 words 50% (due during the semester) and a 2-hour examination 50% (held at the end of semester).
