Prerequisites

Non-native speakers of English may enrol without sitting for a placement test but may be recommended to other subjects during the first two weeks of the semester depending on their English language proficiency. Native or near-native speakers of English are not eligible to enrol.

Subject Description

In this subject academic language skills are taught using the content of architecture, urban planning, landscape architecture, and property and construction. Students will develop skills of speaking confidently in tutorials and presentations; reading texts from their disciplines critically; efficiently accessing information from lectures, libraries and through the internet; and writing assignments accurately, using the appropriate conventions for referencing. Students will complete a small project in this subject, in which the focus is on conducting independent research and participating effectively in groups.

Assessment

A 750 word annotated bibliography 20% (due mid-semester), a 1500 word report 30% (due at the end of semester), a 750-word oral presentation 20% (due week 10), a journal of class writing tasks totalling 1000 words 25% (due throughout the semester) and tutorial participation 5%.
