175-106 The Linguistics of English

Formerly available as 175-005. Students who have completed 175-005 are not eligible to enrol in this subject.

This subject is an introduction to the origins and history of English and the structure of English grammar. Students should develop skills for describing and analysing the English language and an understanding of Australian English, accents of English, dialectal and stylistic variation, and pidgins and creoles.

• develop their skills in critical thinking and analysis through tutorial discussion and problem-based exercises;

• develop their skills in communicating knowledge intelligibly and economically through written assignment work;

• develop their skills in thinking creatively and in theoretical terms through developing a conceptual framework of human language.

Two pieces of written assessment of 1000 words each 60% (due mid-semester and after the AVCC common week respectively) and a 2-hour examination 40% (during the examination period).
