Subject Description

Does the future of Asia lie with science? Is the future of science Asian? Are technological developments promoting Asian values or undermining cultural traditions? This subject examines the development of science and associated technologies in Asian contexts. Through examining case studies of science and technology in Asia we will ask about relations between science and civilisation, examine connections between European colonialism, science and technology, and consider cultural issues that emerge in contemporary development projects promoting science and technology. Case studies will be drawn from India, China, and Indonesia.
