Subject Description

This subject examines German literary, social and cultural history from 1930 to the present through a study of selected readings. Students should gain an understanding of the socially critical function of literature throughout this period, and be introduced to German dissident writing, in particular since 1960.

Generic Skills

  • have acquired skills in research, critical thinking and contextualising information;

  • have developed skills in communicating knowledge intelligibly through oral presentations and esays in German.

Assessment

A 1000 word class paper during semester (3rd year) and a 1200 word class paper during semester (4th year) 30%, and an essay of 3000 words (end of semester) (3rd year) 4000 words (end of semester) (4th year) 70%.
