This subject is taught by distance delivery, it is expected that students will work for 2 hours a week with the supplied materials

Subject Description

This subject is offered on-line. It builds on skills acquired in Beginners Swedish, or equivalent, and focuses on communicative language skills in a variety of situations, ranging from everyday situations to more formal encounters. Special emphasis is placed on listening comprehension skills where students will gain an increased understanding of different registers as well as regional and social language variation. Students will also engage in active language production via discussion and negotiation tasks in both ­synchronic (on-line chat) and asynchronic (classroom bulletin board) mode. On completion of the subject, students should have: developed an increased understanding of spoken Swedish in a variety of contexts; acquired ­communicative skills for expressing themselves with an increasing level of ease and correctness; achieved the level of competence required for admittance into 126-066 Intermediate Swedish C and 126-067 Intermediate Swedish D.

Assessment

Assessed aural/oral work of 2000 words comprising 20-minute listening comprehension tests 25% (during semester), negotiation tasks/discussion tasks 25% (during semester), regular discussion/chat participation 10% (during semester) and a 15-minute oral examination over the telephone 40%.
