Subject Description | This subject will provide a sound background in the application of ecological theory and its practical implementation to present-day issues. Topics will include ecological tools in environmental management; the scientific basis of conservation and management of natural and altered ecosystems; fire ecology and management; endangered species assessment and management; restoration ecology and contaminated land remediation; urban ecology and landscape management; and the role of ecological research in global problems. By successfully completing this subject, students should gain skills in ecological approaches to the conservation and management of biodiversity and the restoration of degraded ecosystems; acquisition, analysis and critical interpretation of ecological data; preparation, writing and presentation of reports; professionalism in ecological and environmental practice. |

Assessment | Written work totalling 8000 words comprising a 2-hour examination 30% (due at the end of semester), a fieldwork project report (due late semester) 30%, weekly laboratory exercises 30% and seminar notes 10%. Students must attend and complete the written work for the field camp and a minimum of 80% of scheduled laboratory and seminar classes to be eligible to pass the subject. |
