116-034 Quebec: Identity in a Globalising World

116-133 French I: Contemporary French B and 116-134 French I: Language in Context II or equivalent.

This subject examines the dynamic relationships between language, culture and nationalism which help to construct the identity of the French-speaking province of Quebec in Canada. Students will be introduced to the cultural, social and political history of Quebec and become acquainted with basic features of québécois French. By paying particular attention to contemporary québécois film and television, and through selected linguistic and social documents, the subject focuses on the place of language in the past and present struggles over québécois identity. The subject will be taught in French.

Critical thinking and analysis: through required and recommended reading, essay writing and tutorial discussion, and by assessing the strength of arguments; Understanding of social, political, historical and cultural contexts and international awareness/openness to the world: through the contextualisation of judgements and knowledge, developing a critical self-awareness, being open to new ideas and new aspects of French and Italian culture, and by formulating arguments; Communicating knowledge intelligibly and economically: through essay and assignment writing, tutorial discussion and class presentations.

A 15-minute expose subsequently written up and totalling 1500 words 40% (during semester, written version due 2 weeks after presentation) or a 2-hour document analysis 40% (week 10), a 2500 word essay in French 60% (due end of semester).
