116-133 French I: Contemporary French B and 116-134 French I: Language in Context II. European studies students wishing to enrol in this subject would normally have completed first-year European studies, see Prerequisites.

This subject covers topics such as exile and immigration in France; immigration policies and their direct impact on the migrant population; colonisation and decolonisation; racism and xenophobia; French identity, nationality and citizenship. On completion of this subject, students should be able to analyse critically and synthesise coherently the arguments in the current debate on immigration in France; discriminate among statements of evidence, interpretation, opinion and facts, regarding the definition and redefinition of the notions of culture, identity, and Frenchness; compare and reflect on similar issues of immigration in Australia. This subject will be taught in French.

A 15-minute oral presentation 20% (due during the semester), a 1-hour written test equivalent to 1000 words 30% (due during the semester).
