110-438 Modern Indonesian Literature

Completion of 110-069 Indonesian Level 2B or equivalent language proficiency as determined by the Institute.

This subject is an overview of trends in modern Indonesian literature from the Nationalist period to the present. A variety of literary works are read and discussed in Indonesian, placing them within their historical and cultural context. On completion of the subject, students should be familiar with the major schools of literature in modern Indonesia and their relationship to Indonesian historical trends; and have read and analysed a number of important modern Indonesian literary works of various genres.

• acquire written communication skills through essay writing and seminar discussion; show attention to detail through essay preparation and writing;

• acquire time management and planning skills through managing and organising workloads for reccommended reading, essay and assignment completion;

• acquire public speaking skills through tutorial and seminar discussion and class presentations;

• acquire critical thinking and analysis skills through recommended reading, essay writing and tutorial discussion, and by determining strength of an argument;

• acquire research skills through competent use of the library, and other information sources and the definition of areas of inquiry and methods of research. thinking in theoretical terms through lectures, tutorial discussions, essay writing and engagement in the methodologies of the humanites and social sciences.

Two assignments of 1000 words 20% each (due mid-semester and end semester), an essay of 1500 words 30% (due late semester) and a 1.5-hour written examination 30% (due during the examination period).
