Admission to the postgraduate diploma or fourth-year honours in Indonesian, Islamic studies or Asian studies. Knowledge of Indonesian is required.

Subject Description

This subject offers students the chance to undertake independent research in Indonesian and Malaysian studies in areas of interest to them for which supervision is available, and present the findings of their research in a scholarly manner. Topics might include Islam in Southeast Asia, Indonesian linguistics, modern Indonesian and Malay literature, modern Indonesian history, politics and economics, and Indonesian anthropology.

  • show attention to detail through essay preparation and writing;

  • acquire time management and planning skills through managing and organising workloads for reccommended reading, essay and assignment completion;

  • acquire public speaking skills through tutorial and seminar discussion and class presentations;

  • acquire critical thinking and analysis skills through recommended reading, essay writing and tutorial discussion, and by determining strength of an argument;

  • be able to think in theoretical terms through lectures, tutorial discussions, essay writing and engagement in the methodologies of the humanites and social sciences;

  • acquire research skills through competent use of the library, and other information sources and the definition of areas of inquiry and methods of research.

Assessment

For 3rd year: an essay of 2000 words 50% (due mid-semester) and a final essay of 2000 words 50% (due during the examination period). For 4th year: an essay of 2500 words 50% (due mid-semester) and a final essay of 2500 words 50% (due during the examination period).
