A 1-hour lecture and seven hours of language classes per week, including a computer laboratory class

Subject Description

This subject provides students with an opportunity to read and listen to authentic Japanese materials and learn to communicate on a range of topics. Students will learn a further 150 kanji (Chinese characters) and will be introduced to various aspects of Japanese culture. Computer laboratory instruction will support the curriculum.

Generic Skills

  • written communication through essay writing and seminar discussion;

  • attention to detail through essay preparation and writing;

  • time management and planning through managing and organising workloads for recommended reading, essay and assignment completion;

  • public speaking through tutorial and seminar discussion and class presentations.

Assessment

Four vocabulary quizzes of 100 words 4% (due throughout the semester), four 5-minute listening tests 4%, a 20-minute listening test 6% (due mid to end of semester), an 8-minute speaking test 10% (due at the end of semester), a 5-minute short oral presentation 6% (due beginning to mid-semester), a 500-word written assignment 5% (due mid-semester), two short paragraphs of 100 words each 1% each (due early and mid-semester respectively), a 1200-word written team project assignment 9%, a 10-minute oral presentation 9% (commencing mid-semester and due at the end of semester) and a 2-hour final examination 45% (due during the examination period).
