Prerequisites

Students must have completed two semesters of study of Chinese at the University of Melbourne in order to obtain credit for this subject. 110-029 Introductory Chinese 2B and 110-030 Spoken Introductory Chinese 2B, 110-161 Chinese 1B, 110-182 Standard Chinese 1B and 110-122 Spoken Standard Chinese 1B are the minimum levels required.

70-80 hours of language classes at a university in China commencing in December or January prior to Chinese New Year

Subject Description

This subject is intended to provide an in-country study experience for those students who are unable to study overseas for the longer period of time required by the University's exchange programme. Students will experience Chinese culture and society at first hand while intensively practising their language skills.

Generic Skills

  • have an increased ability to function in an intercultural context;

  • have greater knowledge of intercultural communication practices;

  • have the adaptability to cope with a different learning regimen;

  • have increased levels of cross-cultural awareness.

Assessment

A 2-hour written examination 50%; 45-minute listening comprehension test 20% and a 10-minute oral test 30% (all due in the final week). Students are required to have a minimum of 90% class attendance and achieve a pass in all tests set by the host university.
