Subject Description | This subject focuses on cultural interaction among the lands of the eastern Mediterranean (Aegean, Cyprus, the Levant and to a lesser extent Anatolia and Egypt). Although we touch on the emergence of civilization in these areas the emphasis is on the end of the Bronze Age, particularly the emergence and collapse of Mycenaean civilization. The purpose of the course is to situate the Mycenaean world in a wider context by looking at issues or problems that confront archaeologists working in neighboring regions. The topics we will be considering include the idea of a Mediterranean culture with distinct regional identities, the role of trade in establishing a prestige goods economy, seafaring, art as it developed into an "International Style" of iconography, metallurgy, warfare and the fall of Troy, and the ethnicity and the identity of the Sea Peoples. This last examines archaeological evidence for the proposed Mycenaean origin of Philistines. |
