Subject Description

This subject introduces students to Roman comic drama, and positions it in relation to its historical context and the Greek literary tradition on which it draws. Students will read a play by either Plautus or Terence, and, through close readings, will be encouraged to consider the dramatistÂs use of language and exploration of themes such as slavery, social status, family politics, gender relations and ethnic identity. On completion of the subject students should develop a good knowledge of a key Roman text and an enhanced understanding of Roman literary culture.
