Subject Description

This subject examines the various ways in which the artistic and intellectual changes brought about by the Italian Renaissance impacted on northern artists in France, Germany, and the Netherlands, such as Albrecht Dürer, Jan Gossaert, and Marten van Heemskerck, and their patrons, such as King Francis I and Philip of Burgundy. Other issues considered include the graphic arts, especially engravings, etchings, and printed books using the collections of the National Gallery of Victoria; the role of Renaissance ideas in pageantry and the ephemeral arts, such as decorations for festive entries; the strong presence of local traditions (Hans Holbein, Quentin Metsys, Albrecht Altdorfer, Hans Baldung Grien, Hieronymus Bosch and Grünewald); art in the service of the Reformation (Lucas Cranach); the effect of the art market and private collectors; and Netherlandish art of the second half of the century (Pieter Bruegel, Aertsen and Beuckelaer). Students who successfully complete the subject should have a broad understanding of the styles, techniques and history of the art of the Northern Renaissance.
