Latin subjects

The Centre for Classics and Archaeology offers a full stream of study in the ancient languages Latin and Ancient Greek, see Ancient Greek. Proficiency in both of these languages at the earliest possible stage is highly recommended for those wishing to specialise in the study of the ancient Graeco-Roman world. The ancient languages, therefore, are a fundamental part of the majors and the honours programs in Classics and in Classical Studies and Archaeology, see Classical Studies and Archaeology. Both languages are available as streamed programs of study that can be commenced from first/second year. These can commence either at beginners level or the post-VCE stream. 1. Time commitment to study

As well as scheduled contact hours for lectures, tutorial and seminars a considerable additional time commitment is needed to complete the academic requirements of each subject.

A subject-specific time commitment to study will be provided by your lecturer or tutor at the beginning of semester to help you schedule your workload and successfully manage your time during the semester. 2. Language study streams

The centre offers two streams of Latin:

Beginners
- The beginners stream is available to students who have little or no knowledge of Latin. It is available to students at any year level, although students intending to study Latin are advised to commence their language study in their first year.
Post-VCE
- The post-VCE stream is usually only available to students who have obtained a pass in VCE Latin, or its equivalent.

The structure of the Latin streams usually takes the following forms (subjects are 12.5 points each unless indicated otherwise):

3. Requirements for a major

4. Diploma in Arts (Ancient Languages)

The Diploma in Arts (Ancient Languages) is only available to students who are currently enrolled in a degree course at the University of Melbourne. It consists of a four-year sequence of study, and adds one year to the duration of your degree. You will complete 25 points in each of the four years that you are enrolled (subjects are 12.5 points each unless indicated otherwise):

6. Career opportunities

Prospective employers of arts graduates are often aware of the benefits deriving from rigorous study of the ancient world and its texts and intellectual traditions. This means that the studies offered by the centre are of general relevance. There are also specific opportunities, especially in Latin, in the field of secondary education.
