Horwood Language Centre offers subjects focussed on language learning and language and technology.

The Centre also teaches the following intensive language subjects to students during the Summer Semester:

French
Italian
Spanish

For 2006, intensive beginners German will be taught through the Department of German, Russian and Swedish Studies, see 183-101 Intensive Beginners German.

The subjects are at beginners level and are taught intensively over six and a half weeks of full-time study. They are suitable for students who have little or no knowledge of the language.

An intensive beginners language subject may be taken at first year for 37.5 credit points towards the BA degree.

In some circumstances, completion of an intensive language subject can enable a student to undertake that language at a higher level. However, students must consult with the relevant department for further details.

All intensive languages are quota restricted. Students must submit an application for entry to the Horwood Language Centre by 31 October. Application forms are available at the centre.

Strict enrolment deadlines apply to subjects taught during the Summer Semester. Any enrolment in, or withdrawal from, these subjects must be made in line with HECS census dates.

1. Time commitment to study

As well as scheduled contact hours for lectures, tutorial and seminars a considerable additional time commitment is needed to complete the academic requirements of each subject.

A subject-specific time commitment to study will be provided by your lecturer or tutor at the beginning of semester to help you schedule your workload and successfully manage your time during the semester.
