Subject Description

In this subject students will read sporting events such as the Olympic Games, AFL football, and cricket as performance. They will apply the analytical categories of performance to sport in order to reveal their common structural and semantic patterns. They will examine the way in which sport is constructed and presented for its audiences. Finally they will develop a critique of sport as a cultural practice using the critical paradigms of performance theory.

Assessment

Written work of 4000 words for 3rd year and 5000 words for 4th year, comprising a research project of 2000 words for 3rd year and 3000 words for 4th year in the form of an essay on an aspect of performance sport 50% (due at the end of semester), participation and class presentation of 1000 words for 3rd year and 4th year 25% (students elect the week of presentation), and preparation and presentation of a performance event of 1000 words 25% (due at the end of semester). There is a hurdle requirement of a minimum 80% attendance.
