Subject Description

This subject explores the concept of management and the duties of the manager within the context of the arts industry. Topics covered will include the manager's role in planning for the future of an organisation - short, medium and long term - and the responsibilities and strategies for managing the material, human and cultural resources within arts organisations. Students will engage in practical exercises involving negotiation skills, problem solving and teamwork.

  • demonstrate advanced communication skills;

  • be able to access a broad range of resource material, including traditional text and electronic media;

  • manage time effectively in the completion of a self-directed research project.

Assessment

Continuous assessment during semester consisting of a tutorial paper and presentation equivalent to 1000 words 30% and two written critical reviews equivalent to 500 words each 20%; and an essay equivalent to 2000 words 50% (due at the end of semester). A hurdle requirement of a minimum 80% attendance required.
