A 1-hour photography lecture and a 3-hour practical workshop for three weeks and a 1-hour digital imaging lecture and a 3-hour practical workshop for nine weeks

Subject Description

This subject deals with image creation and manipulation, working with digitally created images and photographic images for subsequent electronic and print publication. The subject takes a practical approach to the varied and appropriate uses of the computer and the camera within imaging processes. Students will learn how to operate a SLR camera, process black and white film, make a contact sheet and use an enlarger, as well as essential software skills in file management, networking, digital image manipulation and the fundamentals of web publishing.

  • demonstrate sound and independent critical and ethical thinking in their choice of materials and processes;

  • be able to present written and oral communication to a professional standard regarding their treatment and material choices.

Assessment

Practical work equivalent to 4000 words comprising of an analogue photography component (contact images and three enlargements) 25% (due week 7); a digital image component (A4 poster) 25% (due week 8); a website 25% (due week 12) and short software exercises and a brief website presentation 25% (conducted throughout semester.) A hurdle requirement of a minimum 80% attendance required.
