Subject Description

The focus of this subject is on the creative process from the first idea to the identification of sources, choice of appropriate style and form, revisions, editing and the presentation of short works. This subject focuses on prose writing including memoir, fiction and essay forms. Students will be encouraged to attempt a variety of forms, to examine their own writing processes, to trial methods used by professional writers (eg. journal writing) and to read widely during the semester.

Generic Skills

  • demonstrate sound and independent critical and ethical thinking in their choice of materials and processes;

  • be able to present written and oral communication to a professional standard regarding their treatment and material choices.

Assessment

Written work totalling 4000 words including 3 major assignments (due weeks 5, 9 and 12) and allocated respectively 30%, 35% and 35%. Regular attendance and participation in tutorials and workshops is required. A hurdle requirement of a minimum 80% attendance required.
