Subject Description

On completion of this subject, students should have an understanding of theories of culture contact and musical change and their application to a variety of forms of migrant music-making in Australia; a critical grasp of the current terminologies and government policies associated with multiculturalism and music in Australia as a result of changing immigration policy; a working knowledge of the ethnomusicological literature concerning the issues of urbanisation, Westernisation, modernisation, appropriation, commercialisation and institutionalisation as they apply to the music of migrants in Australia; and an understanding of the mechanisms for the dissemination and the modes of reception of migrant music in Australia.

Assessment

An independent research project of 2000 words (40%); Class presentation (20%); Journal of weekly readings and assigned tasks (40%).
