Subject Description

On completion of this subject, students will be able to analyse short pieces using various methods of analysis, including linear analysis, and will have formed a critical perspective of the variety of analytical techniques available.

Student will learn how to apply advanced analytic methods to the analysis of tonal and atonal music; evaluate a number of approaches to the analysis of western tonal classical music; and articulate ways of understanding the cultural context of, and ramifications for, the development of Western music analysis.

Assessment

Regular analysis exercises (70%); end-of-semester project (30%).
