Subject Description

Students will study the representative works of Bach and the composers he admired, understand the working environments of musicians working in various German courts and free cities during the first half of the 18th century, comprehend the influences of the Reformation and Counter-Reformation upon religious music and become familiar with the small and large-scale genres and the various musical styles employed by German musicians in the composition of sacred and secular music.

Assessment

Weekly journal entries and class presentations (40%); essay of 3000 words (60%).
