Subject Description | Theories of planning and urban governance are discussed and linked to the analysis of real case studies of different cities in Europe and their planning institutions and practices. The subject considers the following key issues: approaches to planning practice, theoretical paradigms from social and political theory used to frame the idea of planning, concepts opposing collective planning, planning values and ethics, conceptions of democracy that form the political context of planning, institutional opportunities and barriers to planning, and the idea of planning as a form of governance. Lessons from theory and practice are drawn for cities of Australia and the Asia Pacific region. Students are invited to draw on their own experience of a city of their choice and apply the type of analysis outlined in the lectures. |
Assessment | 705-358: Class papers to a maximum of 3000 words (70%), a research essay of maximum 2000 words (30%). (Note that the postgraduate version of the subject, 705-558, will include more advanced tutorial exercises with a separate tutorial class, and more advanced research essay topics). |
