Subject Description

This subject introduces students to the theory and issues associated with leadership and teamwork within a workplace.

Generic skills

  • Develop time management skills with regard to organising workloads and submitting assignments;

  • Effectively investigate a problem and provide solutions;

  • Demonstrate oral presentation skills;

  • Participate in-group tasks and demonstrate leadership qualities;

  • Participate in interview situations;

  • Build initiative through self-directed studies and tasks;

  • Develop social workplace skills and demonstrate an understanding of staff management principles;

  • Demonstrate the ability to negotiate with a range of different people in a range of different circumstances.

The subject covers the areas of:

  • Leading and Managing;

  • Leadership and Your Work Environment;

  • What is My Leadership Style?

  • Leaders as Change Agents in the Workplace;

  • The Benefits of Teams and Teamwork;

  • The ways in which teams develop and some of the barriers teams encounter when they are introduced to the workplace;

  • Building Better Teams;

  • The differences between leadership and management;

  • Tasks and issues that a team leader will need to address in order to maintain an efficient functioning team.

Assessment

The workbook (50%) and report of up to 2,000 words (50%).
