Subject Description

This subject is designed to provide students with hands-on experience in the context of a criminal justice agency. The placement is designed as a 'mock' consultancy, not as work experience. The purpose of the subject is to expose students to the operation of various government and community-based agencies and to provide them with an opportunity to enhance their skills of observation, cooperation with others, listening, analysis, report writing and developing appropriate professional contacts in the course of the research.

Generic Skills

  • have well-developed problem-solving skills in the specialist area;

  • have significant capacity to articulate knowledge and understanding in oral and written presentations;

  • have a capacity to engage where appropriate with issues in contemporary society.

Assessment

An essay of 3000 words 25% (due at the end of the first semester of enrolment) and an agency report of 5000 words 70% (due at the end of the second semester of enrolment). Practical work may be substituted for part of the written work. A 20-minute oral presentation will constitute 5% of the assessment (due during the second semester of enrolment).
