37.5 points of second/third-year linguistics and applied linguistics subjects. In particular years, depending on the nature of the advanced topic, students may be recommended to have completed an introductory subject relevant to this topic.

Subject Description

A program of advanced seminars on a current topic in theoretical linguistics, such as a particular grammatical theory. Subject availability and topic studied vary from year to year depending on the availability of experts in the field visiting the Department.

Generic Skills

  • communicate intelligibly and economically their understanding of debates within this area;

  • understand the social and cultural context of the construction of identities in and through language.

Assessment

Written work totalling 5000 words comprising a problem set of 1500 words 40% (due mid semester) and an essay of 3500 words 60% (due at the end of the semester).
