Thirty hours of lectures and tutorials taught in intensive mode during the winter recess. There will be 20 hours of lectures and 10 tutorials

Subject Description

This subject examines the relationship between conflict, culture and language in a theoretical context with a view to better understanding of the causes and consequences of cross-cultural ethno-political conflict. It has also the practical aim of introducing some cross-cultural conflict resolution skills.

Generic Skills

  • develop research skills through the use of library and other resources to investigate conflict and language;

  • be able to communicate effectively in essay form;

  • develop the ability to think dialectically about complex situations.

Assessment

Two assignments of 2000 words each comprising a research literature assignment and a practical report based on a cross-cultural conflict mapping exercise (due at the end of semester).
