136-416 Beyond Realism and Relativism

Formerly available as 136-416 and 136-064. Students who have completed 136-416 or 136-064 are not eligible to enrol in this subject. This subject may be cancelled unless enrolments reach five.

Usually admission to the postgraduate diploma or fourth-year honours, or a postgraduate coursework program.

This subject will introduce students to key themes in contemporary debate in the philosophy of science, such as those emerging from the opposition between scientific realism and epistemological realism.

• have experience of thinking systematically about difficult intellectual problems of an abstract nature;

• have practice conducting research, speaking and writing clearly and reading carefully.

A 5000 word research essay 100% (due at the end of the semester).
