Subject Description

This subject is an introduction to spoken and written German for students with little or no knowledge of German. During the subject students will be introduced to the basic spoken language and some of the grammatical structures of the German language and should develop the capacity to apply these principles in speech and writing. Students should develop the ability to read and evaluate a small range of German texts and achieve the level of language competency required for admittance into 126-128 Beginners German C and 126-129 Beginners German D.

Generic Skills

  • have acquired reading and writing skills in a foreign language;

  • be able to work efficiently as a team member;

  • have an understanding of social and cultural diversity.

Assessment

A 3-hour examination 70% (during the examination period) and short weekly assignments and fortnightly vocabulary tests totalling 1000 words 30% (throughout the semester). Students need to attend at least 80% of the classes to be admitted to the examination.
