Subject Description | This subject is intended to foster linguistic competence in a number of areas: oral-aural communication skills required in normal and professional life, in particular, for oral presentations (exposés, debates etc.); pronunciation, in particular, acquisition of native-like patterns of delivery; ability to write and translate (French-English, English-French) texts of various length, in different registers, in particular French academic writing. Students should complete the subject with a mastery of a wide range of vocabulary, related to the themes and genres studied in class; and an ability to analyse, discuss and use complex grammatical and discourse structures at sentence and text level. |

Assessment | A 30-minute classpaper of 1500 words subsequently written up 30% (due a week after the presentation), brief oral presentations and generic exercises based on key language topics totalling 2000 words 40% (due at regular intervals during semester) and a 1500 word final test in textual analysis and writing 30% (held during the examination period). |
