37.5 points at either post-beginners or post-VCE sequence for third year, admission to the postgraduate diploma or fourth-year honours in Italian for fourth year.

The subject consists of two parts: (1) Contrastive analysis of Italian and English sound systems and language structures in order to highlight the differences; and (2) Varieties of Italian component which will focus on a range of varieties of Italian in use today. This will include looking at factors (eg. regional, social, cultural and political) that may influence such variation. It will also consider the role of the Italian on the world stage and the influence of other languages on Italian. This subject is both descriptive and practical and is intended to assist students with a better understanding of Italian in its many contexts.

• be capable of communicating knowledge intelligibly and economically through essay and assignment writing, tutorial discussion and class presentations;

• gain skills in public speaking and confidence in self-expression through tutorial participation and class presentations.

A 1-hour written class test of 1000 words 30% (due mid semester), a take home assignment totalling 1000 words for 3rd year and 2000 words for 4th year 30% (due at the end of semester), a 1-hour exam of 1000 words 30% (due at the end of semester) and a 5-minute oral, totalling 1000 words 10% (due at the end of semester).
