Subject Description

Genre is a concept whereby cultural practices are identified and distinguished from one another. Traditionally used for distinguishing the literary genres in ancient poetics, it was also used for the genres of public speech, in rhetoric. In contemporary usage, the term serves very broadly, covering both the arts and daily interaction. Each genre does different work, whether this work be the purposes, means and manners of different kinds of communication, or whether it be different ways of representing bits of the world. The study of genre involves investigating how language works in relation with other means of signification within precise socio-cultural parameters; it is thus a useful way of investigating the nexus of language and culture. This is a central preoccupation for students of languages.
