Subject Description

This subject involves various exercises and activities designed to consolidate and develop further the linguistic and communication skills gained in first semester. These include grammar exercises, which explore more sophisticated structures (such as argumentation); group work; short presentations; and listening comprehension. Textual studies' classes continue, moving on to the work of de Beauvoir, Ernaux, Sartre, and Robbe-Grillet. Students continue to develop their reading comprehension skills, and build on skills in critical analysis acquired in first semester.

Generic Skills

  • be capable of communicating knowledge intelligibly and economically through essay and assignment writing, tutorial discussion and class presentations;

  • develop skills in written communication through essay and assignment preparation and writing;

  • develop skills in public speaking and confidence in self-expression through tutorial participation and class presentations;

  • develop attention to detail through close reading and textual analysis, essay preparation and writing, and examination revision;

  • develop skills in time management and planning through managing and organizing workloads for required and recommended reading, essay and assignment completion and revision for examinations.

Assessment

Three 20 minute written tests 20% (during the semester), one take home assignment of 1000 words 15% (due in week 8), one 25-minute textual studies class test 10% (in week 5), one 7-minute oral exam 15% (during the examination period), a 1-hour written language exam 20% (during the examination period) and one 750 word textual studies essay 20% (due during the examination period).
