Completion of 116-009 Intermediate French A and 116-010 Intermediate French B or equivalent.

116-011 Intermediate French C.

This subject will allow students to study key aspects of French civilisation which have shaped 19th and early 20th century French society and culture, through the analysis of graded literary texts. In addition, the subject will give students the opportunity to develop language skills in their cultural context. On completion of the subject students should be able to appreciate key aspects of 19th and 20th century French culture and the development of French society, and have acquired the ability to comment critically and express opinions on the texts under study and on various aspects of French culture.

• have an understanding of social, political, historical and cultural contexts and international awareness/openness to the world;

• through the contextualisation of judgements and knowledge, develop a critical self-awareness, be open to new ideas and new aspects of French culture, and be able to formulate arguments;

• develop written communication through essay and assignment preparation and writing;

• develop public speaking and confidence in self-expression through tutorial participation and class presentations;

• develop attention to detail through close reading and textual analysis, essay preparation and writing, and examination revision.

A 250 word written exercise in French 15% (due in week 6), a 1-hour written test 45% (held during the examination period) and a 1-hour written slide test 40% (due in week 11). A hurdle requirement of a minimum 75% attendance required.
