Subject Description | This subject aims to familiarise students with colloquial and dialectal expressions used in Japan. It introduces students to various styles of Japanese spoken by those differentiated by age, gender and region. It will also give students opportunities to examine different registers in various conversation settings. In class, students will view contemporary Japanese films and TV dramas and analyse various types of conversations. Students will practise speaking in appropriate styles depending on the situation. Students who complete this subject should have acquired good knowledge of colloquial language. |

Assessment | For 3rd-year students: two oral tests of 1200 words 30% (due mid-semester and at the end of semester respectively), an assignment of 800 words 20% (due at the end of semester) and a 2000-word final examination 50% (due during the examination period). For 4th year students: two oral tests of 1200 words 24% (due mid-semester and at the end of semester respectively), an assignment of 800 words 16% (due at the end of semester), a 2000-word final examination 40% (due during the examination period) and a project paper of 1000 words 20% (due during the examination period). Students are required to attend a minimum of 70% of all classes. |
