Subject Description

This subject will develop students' ability to handle Chinese texts and oral Chinese over a wide range of subject matter. Scope will include official documents, discussion papers on current affairs, academic and popular scientific articles, and literary works. Students are expected to develop skills in translation, writing in Chinese and oral presentation, both formal and informal. They will be introduced to a range of reference tools used by professional translators.

Generic Skills

  • acquire written communication skills through essay writing and seminar discussion;

  • show attention to detail through essay preparation and writing;

  • acquire time management and planning skills through managing and organising workloads for recommended reading, essay and assignment completion;

  • acquire public speaking through tutorial and seminar discussion and class presentations.

Assessment

A short translation assignment 15% (due mid-semester), a short essay assignment 15% (due at the end of semester), an oral presentation 10% (due at the end of semester), a 2-hour final examination 50% (due during the examination period) and continuous class participation 10%.
