Subject Description

Through this subject honours students are encouraged to utilise Japanese language sources for their research. Students submit an English translation of a Japanese text chosen by the student and approved by the subject coordinator. The text must be related to the honours thesis. The main goal of this subject is to enable students to demonstrate a clear understanding of the Japanese text through lucidly expressed English paraphrase.

Generic Skills

  • acquire attention to detail through close reading and textual analysis;

  • acquire written communication skills through assignment preparation and writing;

  • acquire time management and planning skills through managing and organising workloads for required and recommended reading.

Assessment

A draft translation of 2000 words 20% (due mid-semester) and a final translation of 5000 words 80% (due at the end of semester).
