Subject Description

Students should receive a broad grounding in research methods and materials for Japanese studies, particularly in the humanities and social sciences. Students will prepare a research design and annotated bibliography as a preparation for undertaking honours level studies.

Generic Skills

  • acquire research skills through frequent and systematic use of the library and other information sources, the definition of areas of inquiry and familiarisation with research methods;

  • be able to think in theoretical and analytical terms through seminar discussions, writing and engagement in the methodologies of the humanities and social sciences;

  • acquire time management and planning through managing and organising workloads for required and recommended reading, and assignment completion.

Assessment

An annotated bibliography of 2000 words 40% (due mid-semester), a research design of 2500 words 50% (due mid-semester) and class participation 10%.
