110-450 Japanese Through Translation

Two of the following subjects: 110-437 Japanese Writing System, 110-468 Colloquial Japanese and 110-455 Japanese Language and Culture or equivalent or admission to fourth-year Honours or the Postgraduate Diploma in Japanese for fourth-year students.

This subject introduces advanced learners of Japanese to two interrelated, but different, areas of language study: interpreting and translation. It provides the students with opportunities to understand knowledge and techniques necessary for interpreting and translating. It involves practice of interpreting and text translation in various settings and contexts. Students are also encouraged to explore the differences in the two languages. Students who complete this subject should have obtained further insight into the structures, grammar, and discourse of Japanese. They also should have understood basic skills and techniques involved in interpreting and translation.

• gain skills in written communication through essay writing and seminar discussion;

• learn attention to detail through essay preparation and writing;

• gain skills in time management and planning through managing and organising workloads for recommended reading, essay and assignment completion;

• gain skills in public speaking through tutorial and seminar discussion and class presentations.

For 3rd-year students: written work totalling 2000 words 50% (due throughout the semester), a project of 1000 words written assignment (commencing at the beginning of semester and due at the end of semester) and a final examination 50%. For 4th-year students: written work totalling 3000 words 60% (due throughout the semester), a project of 1000 words written assignment (commencing at the beginning of semester and due at the end of semester) and a final examination 40% (due at the end of semester). Students are required to attend a minimum of 70% of all classes in order to be eligible to take the examinations.
