Subject Description

This is an advanced subject on contemporary Japan using daily satellite television programs from Tokyo. Emphasis is on understanding and interpreting topics in news and current affairs programs including politics and international relations, economics and trade, commercials and advertising, and popular culture. Students should gain a high level of understanding of the Japanese language as it is used in the real-life context of current television programming. The subject should greatly enhance students' fluency in Japanese and awareness of current idiomatic expressions in a variety of fields. The subject will also include the study of background readings in both English and Japanese.

Generic Skills

  • acquire written communication skills through essay and assignment preparation and writing;

  • acquire time management and planning skills through managing and organising workloads for assignments;

  • through tutorial participation gain confidence in public speaking and self-expression.

Assessment

Two essays of 2000 words each for 3rd year students and 2500 words each for 4th-year students 100% (due mid-semester and at the end of semester respectively). Students are required to attend a minimum of 70% of all classes.
