Subject Description

This subject is a historical and sociolinguistic study of Indonesian or Malay (as it is used to be called in the past and is still called outside Indonesia). Selected texts will be used to illustrate the socio-historical, ethnic and regional variation of Indonesian. Students who complete the subject should have a general knowledge of the historical development of Indonesian; be able to recognise different forms of Indonesian and to translate short passages of non-standard forms of Indonesian in English; and understand the politics of language standardisation with particular reference to Indonesian and Malaysian Malay.

  • acquire time management and planning skills through managing and organising workloads for recommended reading, essay and assignment completion;

  • acquire public speaking skills through tutorial and seminar discussion and class presentations;

  • acquire critical thinking and analysis skills through recommended reading, essay writing and tutorial discussion, and by determining strength of an argument;

  • acquire research skills through competent use of the library, and other information sources and the definition of areas of inquiry and methods of research;

  • be able to think in theoretical terms through lectures, tutorial discussions, essay writing and engagement in the methodologies of the humanites and social sciences.

Assessment

An assignment of 1000 words 20% (due early in semester), an assignment of 1000 words 20% (due mid-semester), a 2000-word assignment 40% (due late in semester) and continuous class participation 20%.
